  16. 1989 death of a black youth in Bensonhurst, a mostly white
  17. neighborhood; in Brooklyn, N.Y. A member of the mob that cornered
  18. and killed Yusuf K. Hawkins, 16, Vento had agreed to be a witness
  19. in exchange for immunity. But he fled the city rather than
  20. testify against his friends, and later agreed to stand trial. He
  21. has already been convicted of unlawful imprisonment and menacing.</p>
